It’s always good to start with the post office
When in doubt where to being, it’s always a good idea to head to the post office. Or simply change your location online, since this is the modern era we live in. You can even set the start date as you wish, and have your location automatically changed from the day of your move. By doing this, you will have mail forwarded to your new residence for the next 12 months, after which you’ll have to repeat the whole process.
When to do it? At least a week before the moving day but preferably sooner. If you do it just a few days before the moving day, there could be a gap between the day of your move and the day they start forwarding mail to your new address.
Changing your address when you move must be done for all the utilities
Now, this is really something you want to get out of the way as soon as you know you will be faced with relocation. Imagine the worst case scenario when moving. Somewhere in there, we are sure you would see walking into a cold house during winter, or not having a stable Internet connection. And that’s something no amount of reputable Pennsylvania movers can help you with. It all depends on the date you notified your providers about your new location. Which companies are to be included?
- Gas and electricity
- Internet, phone, and cable
- The water department
- Sewer utility company
- Garbage/recycling company
When to do it? Well, the right answer is as soon as possible and at least 3 weeks before the moving date. If possible, arrange for all services to end in the evening hours of your move-in date and to start on the new location in the morning hours of that same day. That way, neither you nor your piano movers Pittsburgh will have to work at night.
Let your employer know that you are moving
You don’t have to be best friends with your employer. It’s only common courtesy to let them know that you are moving. Even if you do receive paychecks that are directly deposited to your bank account, and therefore think there’s no reason for your employer to know your address, you never know whether an emergency will come up. Besides, they will need to spend pay stubs and tax forms to your place, so it’s clear that they should know where to reach you.
When to do it? Unlike with all the other entries, it will be enough to notify your employer a few days before. Changing your address when you move is complicated enough and, luckily, at least this one is easy.
Clubs, magazines, and subscriptions
Hey, not all in life can be work without any fun, right? Who doesn’t like to sit back after a long day at work with a cup of coffee and the latest edition of Cosmo or Esquire? Luckily, changing your address for different subscriptions and club memberships can be done via an e-mail.

Don’t forget to inform the tax agencies about your change of address after moving
Tax evasion is a serious offense and we are not suggesting you would ever do it willingly, but this is just to remind you not to do it coincidentally. You should change your address when moving with both the federal revenue agency and your state tax agency. Luckily, in most states, the change can be done online. Just visit your state’s government website and look for directions as to how to do it. Usually, the process will be pretty straightforward.
When to do it? It’s good to do it at least two weeks before the move. There isn’t a specific time frame, but it’s better to get it out of the way as soon as possible.
